The village of Panagia (which takes its name - meaning "Our
Lady" - from the dedication of a fine 10th century church)
commands a panoramic view of the whole island. The greatest
attraction of Serifos is its magnificent beaches (Mega Livadi,
Koutalas, Agios Sostis. Psili Amos, Agios Ioanis, Sikamia).
However, it is a charm all of its own, something in the unique
"atmosphere" of the island, which attracts an ever-increasing
number of visitors from Greece and abroad.
3rd Day Sifnos, a monotonous grey landscape
of rock, broken up here and there by a gleaming white chapel,
is the first impression made on visitors as the ferry draws
into the harbour. But this gives them no idea of the beauty
- spots waiting to be discovered in-land, which together with
the island's superb architecture, rank it among the jewels of
the Aegean. The island was famous in ancient times for the wealth,
which came from its gold and silver mines and the quarries of
Sifnos stone. It enjoyed great prosperity in Classical times,
as can be seen from its Treasure, dedicated to Apollo at Delphi.
An attractive drive from the port of Kamares, a modern town
with pottery workshops, brings us to the island's capital, Apolonia.
Standing on three hillsides, with its typical Cycladic style
of architecture, it is breathtakingly beautiful. It ahs an interesting
folklore museum, while the churches of the greatest interest
are those of Our Lady 'Ouranofora' and St Sozon.
Like that of the villages round about (Artemonas, Exambela,
Kato Petali), the architecture of Apolonia is an odd assemblage
in which walls, terraces, courtyards and alleyways form large
cubes in a continuous complex, in total harmony with the natural
environment. The sole exception to this is the old capital of
Kastro, which remains an example of medieval town planning.
A collection of Archaic and Hellenistic sculpture and of ceramics
from the Geometric to the Byzantine period is on display in
its Archaeological Museum.
4th Day Paros, less well known than Mykonos,
Paros is a very sought-after island by many celebrities. With
a main town of white cubic houses clustered around a bustling
port in the summer, there is much to explore. A 13th Century
castle area has winding alleys and archways, stone houses and
shops with wooden balconies. A fascinating and enchanting town.
5th Day Mykonos One of the most famous and
cosmopolitan of the Greek islands. Renowned discotheques and
nightclubs attract Athenian show business personalities as well
as non-Greek tourism. Fascinating in its diversity and yet it
remains a small Greek village too! Tiny streets and windmills
on the hill. An area of the town lets onto the sea and is aptly
called the Venice of Mykonos is also much photographed. Some
really sandy beaches exist on the island and the entire island
has a surfeit of churches, said to number 365 in total.
6th Day Kea, this exceptionally picturesque
island lies close to the Cape of Sounion. Between its mountains,
small valleys sparsely sown with fruit trees run right down
to the sea, opening out into pretty little bays. Kea is a much
preferred weekend escape, attracting more and more visitors
every year.
