To the east are the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket whose wealth was built on whaling and where the old whaling captain's homes are still inhabited, often in their original condition. Around Cape Cod the cost is gentle and strewn with mile upon mile of white-sand beaches and dunes. North of Boston there are the world-famous towns of Salem, Gloucester and Marblehead - renowned for their witches, fishing schooners and yachts - and further east is the delightful city of Portsmouth where a chance to visit the Strawberry Banke heritage centre should not be passed up.
