Cruising in America’s back yard.
With sky rocketing fuel prices and uncertainties in the airline
industry, a cruise through the Florida Keys is an attractive
alternative to a tropical vacation. Laid back with over 800
islands and 125 miles – the distance between Miami and Key West
- you will find a little bit of everything. They offer the same
first rate fishing, diving and snorkel opportunities that you
would find in the Caribbean. A little known fact is that the
only living, coral barrier reef in the continental US is found
here.
Dine on lobster, fresh fish and shrimp on the BBQ. Your crew
would be more than happy to share their secrets on how to prepare
the local cuisine. Speaking of local, you will find a cast of
characters known as “conchies”. Artists, writers, retirees all
looking for that little piece of paradise.

The shallow, clear and protected waters contribute to the pristine condition
of the Florida Keys. There are secluded coves and beaches, lively
marinas and restaurants, wild life and fauna.
With hundreds of islands to explore, we at Northrop and Johnson
BVI have decided to give you a sample of destinations that you
could visit in the Florida Keys either by sailing boat or power
boat. Whatever your interests, you will find something to tantalize
your senses. To maximize your time we suggest that you cruise
from Miami to Key West and than return by rental car from Key
West, a mere 3 hours back to the Miami.
Key Largo
Key Largo’s proximity to the everglades makes it a premier destination
for kayakers and eco tourists. There is a cast of characters that
make up this vibrant artist community. Key Largo is also home
to the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Florida Keys
National Marine Sanctuary. The coral formations and variety of
fish are absolutely astounding. You could spend days snorkeling
and sailing the reefs and wrecks in the park.
Tavernier Key
This island is the next stop directly south of Key Largo. Tavernier
Key is also home to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation
Center. Here you can see birds being nursed back to health. The
center operates solely on donations so please leave a few dollars
behind to ensure the “Keys birds can continue to receive the care
they need.
Islamorada
Jump overboard and explore the wreckage of the San Pedro located
in just 18 ft of water just off Indian Key. Explore the underwater
Coral gardens of both Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys. At Windley
Key there is no protected anchorage but you can dock at the popular
Holiday Isle Beach and Marina. If you are looking for a bit of
liveliness, this is one of the most fun marinas of the keys. The
famous Tiki Bar offers dockside entertainment from dusk to dawn.
Enjoy the sandy beaches, shop the boutiques and listen to local
musicians.
Marathon
Locally known as “the heart of the keys” this 10 mile long island
city is the center of the Florida Keys chain. This is a popular
area for sailors, divers, snorkelers and for fishing.
Sombrero Reef lies just a few miles offshore. Beyond, the deep
blue waters teem with bill fish and tuna in the winter and dolphin
fish in the summer. Many of the island’s marine activities are
located on Boot Key Harbor, a peaceful tropical cove in the center
of the island.
Big Pine Key and The Lower Keys
The lower keys bring you back to time when life was much simpler.
Here you can snorkel or dive Looe Key coral reef, search the shoreline
for Key Deer or go beyond the reef and drop a line to troll the
deep blue waters. The lower keys have names like Cudjoe Key, Sugarloaf
key and Snipe key. The Saddlebunch Keys and their network of sandy
lagoons and mangrove islands make it the perfect spot to set out
in a kayak with a picnic lunch packed by your chef.
Key West
Welcome to Key West. There is plenty to do for everyone. Diving
and snorkeling the coral reefs and wrecks around Key West is not
to be missed. Kayak the back country, try your hand at fly fishing
across one of the sandy flats. Enjoy a meal at one of the fine
restaurants and watch the sun set along with all the other residents
(a tradition every evening).
As you can see the Florida Keys have so much to offer all yachtsmen.
