In all there are over 700 islands in the Bahamas,
so many that you won’t be able to see them all in just one trip.
Generally there are three distinct areas for cruising – the
Exumas which includes a wide array of islands including the
popular Atlantis Resort along with the pristine Exumas Underwater
Park, and Nassau, the Bahamas capital city,
which lies on island of New Providence. The Abacos which are
laid back and very undeveloped with small villages are less
traveled but perfect for getting away from the hustle &
bustle while the furthest set of islands called Turks
& Caicos offer lots of clean beaches, shallow waters
and miles of reefs that are excellent for scuba diving and fishing.
The climate of the Bahamas is subtropical
to tropical making it a popular destination year round. The
Gulf Stream significantly moderates the climate particularly
in the winter. Summer temperatures in the Bahamas average
30 degrees Celsius and are just 5 degrees Celsius cooler in
the winter unless a ‘norther’ bringing cooler weather &
strong winds blows through.
In 1718 the Bahamas became a British crown
colony later becoming self governing & gaining independence
in 1973 but remaining a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The culture is a mix of African and European influences. The
local villages with wooden structures are colorful with small
gardens. The wide range of cultures can be seen in the islands
music and different styles include; junkanoo, rake and scrape,
calypso and a unique form of hymnal. Marching bands are also
an important part of life and are heard playing at funerals,
weddings and other ceremonial events.
In the less developed outer islands, regattas are important
social events and guests often like to charter around these
events to participate in the lively atmosphere as well as watch
the racing. They usually comprise one or more days of racing
by old-fashioned workboats and combine an onshore festival with
plenty of music & good food. The Bahamian Islands
also have festivals associated with the local traditional crop
or food, such as the "Pineapple Fest" in Gregory Town,
Eleuthera or the "Crab Fest" on Andros.
Abaco & Nassau are major starting points
for yacht charters as you may fly from Florida's
Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami airports. Your charter
yacht is just five minutes from airport. The charter team at
Northrop & Johnson BVI are happy to help
you find the right power yacht or catamaran for your charter
– shallow draft yachts are best for this area.
