The Caribbean has become a year
round destination for Northrop and Johnson BVI clients
looking to spend time in calm anchorages with crystal clear
blue water off white sandy beaches. Wherever you choose to go
in the Lesser Antilles – the Virgins, The Leewards
or the Windwards the number of yachts available for your trip
are amazing.
The US and British Virgin Islands are the
most popular and with good reason. This string of more than
60 small islands strung in a 40 mile chain are appealing to
first time Caribean Yacht Charter guests and
people who return often. Air flights are easy with direct flights
into St. Thomas and connecting air into Tortola
through San Juan making this a good choice even for less than
a week trips. Because the islands are close together so that
you are not going out of sight of land the seas are generally
calm and there are many secluded and safe anchorages to choose.
Another large advantage is that charter yacht in this area less
than 80 feet will offer a set all inclusive rate – great value
in today’s market. Because this is a popular charter destination,
there are a large number of monohulls, catamarans and power
yachts in a variety of sizes to choose from – and that also
means the rates are the most affordable in the world!

The Caribbean Leewards Islands are a rough sail
across the Anegada Passage but are easily accessible from the
large airports on either the Dutch or French sides of the island
of St. Maarten. The Dutch side has more flights
from the USA, while the French airports services European flights.
Popular for its nightlife & casinos, the Dutch side and the
large interior lagoon with flat calm water & a variety or
marinas are perfect for larger power yachts.
Sailing yachts also like the short hops to St. Barths
and Anguilla so there are any number of yachts available in the
Leewards. N&J BVI clients will choose a larger yacht – more
in the 65 to 150 foot range if they plan to also visit Saba, St.
Kits and Nevis which are all part of the Leewards but require
longer open ocean sailing to visit. Some clients will choose to
begin in Antigua and make the one way trip to
St. Maarten or spend longer than a week to be able to see more
of this interesting area. Looking for nightlife & European
flair? Then the Leewards are a good choice for your charter.
The Windwards are further south from the large
French island of Martinique. And include St.
Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines
as well as Grenada. These large islands offer
clients plenty of choices ashore as well as anchorages but there
are fewer yachts based in this area. Another popular spot to consider
that is similar to the Virgin Islands is the
Greandines. However these islands are a bit more separated and
require longer times to sail from anchorage to anchorage. Their
low key traditional Island spirit is sure to
appeal to the charter guest who makes the trip.
